Knowledge of runic writing reached the Nordic countries,
as early as the 3:rd century A.D.
After 400 A.D. it began to be used for inscriptions on stones.
The stone was usually put up to commemorate
a dead person or some great deed.

The inscription reads:

Knut of Vikhusum erected this stone and built
the bridge in memory of his father and mother
and his brothers and sisters.
